Lena's parents Daisy and Dan were in an open relationship when she was conceived but it was an open relationship in name only. They only had eyes for each other from the moment they met and neither had bothered with any other partners, but both were too stuck on the idea of being bohemian and in their mind, more evolved than normal people to suggest making it monogamous. Lena's arrival could have officially (or at least verbally) cemented them as such, but with Dan, a jack of all trades and a master of none having trouble supporting himself and doubting his ability to be a parent, the pair parted ways, though not for the last time.
Truth be told, Daisy isn't quite sure why she went through with the pregnancy. She had never had any desire to be a mother before the opportunity presented itself, but at the time it seemed like just another adventure and Daisy is nothing if not the sort of woman constantly searching for something new. After her initial split with Lena's dad, Daisy started a string of serial dating that has never really ended, believing her inability to ask Dan for a commitment cost her the love of her life. an extremely fickle person, Lena's mother often changed her entire lifestyle and on more than a few occasions, her entire personality in an effort to suit her current boyfriend, though she often didn't need their help to be a total follower. A wildly unhappy and very naive person, Daisy is always looking for something new always accepting, quite blindly that it will change her life around. She dives wholeheartedly into anything, changing her look, religion, town, diet and just about anything and everything about her life as often as some people change underwear. Lena was an unwilling participant on her mother's journey to self discovery and was expected to change with her whenever the slate was wiped clean.
It was fun when she was a child. A game that was constantly changing before it had a chance to get boring. But as the years passed, Lena's father sometimes returning because he had Daisy never could seem to stay away from each other, it became apparent that even though she seemed to have inherited her father's creativity, Lena wasn't much like her parents, especially her mother and seemed determined to prove it with a strong, unwavering personality. Lena's mother and father continued their on/off relationship over the years, still seemingly unable to get themselves together, but despite Lena knowing very well who he is, she has never been able to see Dan as some sort of (admittedly cool) uncle who pops in and out of her life now and again.
The faces and towns changed but Lena more or less stayed the same, though increasingly more unhappy with the situation and her mother's flighty nature by the year. By the time she reached high school, Lena was simply biding her time until she could finally go out on her own, but a new boyfriend changed everything. Sure, Rayne (Lena was almost positive that wasn't his real name) left her mother just as quickly as all the others, but his influence didn't. Lena was sure her mother would give up paganism just as quickly as she had Judaism, Christianity, Kabbalah, Christianity again and her very very brief stint as a Scientologist until she'd watched a documentary and gotten scared they would stalk her, but... it stuck. Even more surprising still, she announced that they were putting down roots. They were staying in New York and she, with a bit of seed money from family and friends, was starting a new age shop.
Surprised but in no way disappointed, Lena was glad to stay put in one place for more than a year for the first time since she could remember. She made friends, though old habits died hard and it took her a long time to realize she could get attached at more than a surface level with them. There was nothing to lose, or even to miss. Neither party was going anywhere. She still hasn't come to this realization with relationships. She knows she isn't leaving New York any time soon ig ever, but she's seen her mom and a few friends lose themselves in relationships often enough to be turned off them completely, possibly even a bit scared she'll turn out to be like the weak woman she's seen crushed by them time and time again.
Lena has been working at Sun and Moon since she was 16 and though she once counted down the days to graduation, she had no idea what she was going to do when it finally came. Knowing that she'd just waste time and money going to college with no idea what she wanted to study, Lena didn't go and has been helping her mom run the shop ever since.
